Action Plan: What to Do If You Are Being Blackmailed for Reviews
Review extortion is a serious policy violation and a crime. Do not panic. Follow these exact steps to protect your business.
Step 1.1: STOP. Do Not Pay.
Never pay the blackmailer. Paying proves you are an easy target and they will only demand more money later.
- Do not reply to their messages.
- Block their email and phone number immediately.
- Take screenshots of everything related to the scammers
Step 1.2: File a Police Report
Blackmail is a crime. Having an official police report number significantly helps when dealing with Google.
- Go to your local police station or cybercrime reporting portal (e.g., ReportCyber in Australia).
- File a report for Extortion/Blackmail.
- Save the Report Number: You will send this to Google as legal proof.
Step 2: Gather Your Evidence
Google will delete the reviews if you can prove they are fake. You need "Receipts."
- Screenshot the threat: Capture the email, text, or message where they demanded money. Ensure the date and sender are visible.
- Screenshot the reviews: Capture the 1-star reviews and the reviewer's profile.
- Create a Timeline: Write down exactly when the demand came in and when the reviews appeared (e.g., "Demanded $500 at 2:00 PM; posted three 1-star reviews at 2:15 PM"). sometimes they post the bad review first then contact you, make sure to record the time and the link of the review and the time he sent you
Step 3: Report the Reviews to Google
Tell Google these are not real customers.
- Go to your Google Business Profile.
- Click the three dots next to the review > Report Review.
- Select "Spam" or "Conflict of Interest" as the reason.
- Pro Tip: Use the Google Review Management Tool to track the status of these reports.
Step 4: Escalate to Google Support
If the "Report" button doesn't work, you need to talk to a human.
- Go to Google Business Profile Help Center.
and you can report Report a concern about Google's compliance with an Australian Industry Online Safety Code or Standard - Fill the form.
- Attach your evidence: Upload the screenshots of the blackmail and your Police Report Number. Make sure to add all evidence in pdf file as you are able to upload only 1 file in this form
Step 5: Reply Professionally (Don't Get Angry)
While you wait for Google to remove them, post a calm public reply so real customers know you are professional.
- Say this: "We have checked our records and cannot find a customer transaction matching this profile. We take all feedback seriously, but this appears to be a spam account. We have reported this activity to Google."
